Opening Details

The Instrumentation and Controls Specialist is responsible for the safe, efficient, and effective operation of equipment in the Williams College Combined Heat and Power Facility, working under the direction of the Engineer in charge. To include leading mechanical tasks within the Heating Plant. Has the ability to calibrate pneumatic and electronic control valves, and annually calibrate all transmitters within the CHP facility. Requiring training to maintain the System Software for Boiler Management Systems (BMS) while working within Siemens PCS 7 and other platforms. Responsible for providing expertise in the start-up, shutdown, operation, and maintenance within the CHP Facility. This position provides direction, technical expertise and technical assistance to the CHP facility employees and support teams.

Responsibilities
  • Ability to direct and lead the maintenance of the Combined Heat and Power (CHP) facility at Williams College, including the Steam Turbine Generator, Diesel Generators, Steam Boilers, and Siemens Software Systems.
  • Works with outside vendors to learn and maintain current software systems and programs used for controlling plant equipment - Including tuning of controls and valves, and probability of offsite schooling and trainings.
  • Position requires, at times, working varied shifts and overtime hours including weekend and holiday coverage due to outages, both scheduled and unscheduled.
  • Ensures safe, reliable, environmentally compliant, and economic operation of the plant.
  • Performs annual calibrations of the CHP's transmitters and other controls as needed.
  • Maintains air compressors, air dryers, and related equipment in order to provide uninterrupted service of instrument air and plant air, taking necessary readings, data, and logging same.
  • Coordinates the daily maintenance work required to maintain plant availability.
  • Establishes high standards and assistS with training of instrumentation and controls to plant employees.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable plant operating procedures and policies.
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of all the power plant systems, operations, and emergency response procedures and when necessary, accesses the appropriate plant manuals.
  • Ensures that all personnel within the plant (either Williams employees or contractors) adhere to all safety guidelines.
  • Ensures proper "Lock-out/Tag-out" procedures are followed, logged, and administered per plant policy procedures and monitors the work status.
  • Communicates with outside departments and shifts both internally and externally.
  • Must hold or be able to get a Massachusetts Hoisting License, classifications 1C and 3A
  • Requires filling in for operators as shift coverage for Lead Operators or Plant Operators as needed

Qualifications
  • Possess a current Massachusetts 2nd Class Engineers License or higher.
  • Licensed Electrician in the state of Massachusetts.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools, multimeters, and specialized tools as required.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate verbally.
  • Must hold a current Massachusetts Hoisting License classifications 1C and 3A.
  • Must hold a valid driver license.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and work on your feet for 12 hour periods.
  • Ability to navigate throughout the heating plant and multiple levels using stairs and ladder climbing.
