Job Summary

The Division of Pediatric Nephrology at the University of Utah School of Medicine is seeking a Physician Assistant to function as a member of the pediatric nephrology team. The team currently consists of 6 providers, 2 nurse practitioners, 1 dietician and 2 registered nurses. This position will be responsible for delivering professional care to patients in an inpatient setting, as well as in an outpatient setting on a limited basis. As part of the patient care team, this position is responsible for providing optimal patient care through effective clinical practice; education of the patient, patient's family, clinical staff, and others; consultation with other healthcare providers; and maintain current knowledge regarding options for optimal patient care and outcomes.

Responsibilities
  1. Assesses the physical condition of a group of patients by performing physical examinations and obtaining medical histories.
  2. Formulates the medical plan and prognosis based on patient's condition.
  3. Consults with physician(s) regarding patient health care plans and treatment.
  4. Orders, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic tests to identify and assess the patient's clinical problems and health care needs.
  5. Initiates and/or recommends medical drug therapies or other forms of related therapeutic treatment and procedures in accordance with approved protocols/policy.
  6. Assist attending with delivery of CRRT, hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and plasmapheresis.
  7. Assist attending with completion of kidney biopsies and admission for observation.
  8. Assist attending with of ordering of and observation during medication infusions.
  9. Complies with medical records policies regarding the complete and accurate documentation of patient care. Initiates and maintains required records and legal documents.
  10. Participates in quality improvement activities.
  11. Counsels patients, families and significant others about health and illness, and promotes health maintenance.
  12. Evaluates, plans, implements, and re-evaluates the care of individuals requiring emergency measures.
  13. Conduct and/or coordinate education to increase the knowledge of patient, patient family, and others. Provide appropriate instruction based on patient needs to support the continuum of care.
  14. Provide general nephrology and dialysis care in the outpatient setting, including urgent outpatient consults or clinic visits.
  15. Stay abreast of current trends in healthcare practice and participate in continuing medical education to ensure optimal clinical knowledge and effective patient care skill.

Minimum Qualifications

Required:
  • Current licensure to practice as a Physician's Assistant from the State of Utah.
  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
Preferred:
  • Certification in ACLS/BLS/NRP/ATLS may be required by your department or by privileging criteria.
This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements.
