Job Summary

The Fairfax Lab in the Division of Microbiology & Immunology is seeking a team-oriented Research Technician (Lab Specialist) with interest in Immunology, Molecular Biology, and mouse models related to infectious disease and vaccination. Our laboratory offers a strong collaborative environment where you will conduct clinically-relevant research using a variety of molecular, biochemical, and cell-based technologies to understand how the immune system recognizes and responds to pathogens, how infection alters the host response to diet induced metabolic disease, how maternal infections immunizations alter offspring immune development and how obtained information can be used to develop novel therapeutic strategies.

Interested candidates will assist the PI by supporting efficient laboratory operations, such as providing technical support for ongoing laboratory projects, including data collection and analysis, maintaining the mouse colony, performing minor animal surgery and assisting with general lab duties such as purchasing and equipment maintenance.

Responsibilities

1. Performs and directs specialized and complex lab tests and experiments.
2. Assists the Principal Investigator in the design, implementation and performance of new protocols and procedures as well as the modification of existing techniques.
3. Analyzes data and prepares reports summarizing research results.
4. Operates complex and specialized laboratory instruments and equipment. Instructs others in their use.
5. Maintains a log of supplies used in procedures.
6. May supervise, train and review the work of laboratory personnel.
7. May coauthor research papers and publications.
8. Supervises and manages the care of research animals; performs minor animal surgery or collect animal tissues and specimens for laboratory analysis.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry or other scientific discipline or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); two years full-time laboratory experience; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required. Working knowledge of advanced scientific techniques and procedures as well as the ability to make statistical calculations, analyze results, prepare reports and perform specialized tests also required.

Preferences

Previous experience with mice, flow cytometry, molecular biology, and maintaining lab operations is a plus.
