DESCRIPTION NATURE OF WORK This position combines skilled work in the operation of heavy road construction and maintenance equipment and general labor and maintenance work. Work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of heavy construction equipment. This class is distinguished from classes at a lower level in that employees in the class must operate such equipment as motor graders, tandem axle trucks and backhoes as a regular assignment, a minimum of 50% of working time. Employees may perform general laboring duties on a variety of construction type activities as well as manual road maintenance activities, and, may supervise employees assigned as helpers. Work is reviewed by an administrative superior who assigns and may inspect work in progress or upon completion. EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED Operate motor grader in assigned district performing work involving dragging and scrapping roads, grading roads, cutting water channels along roadside, plowing snow and related road maintenance functions; change various equipment attachments including snow plow, sander and motor grader blades. Operate heavy trucks hauling rock, dirt, gravel and related construction and road materials including water, snow, sand, salt and debris; operate front-end loaders to load trucks or create stockpiles of rock, dirt, gravel, salt/sand mixtures, snow, debris and construction or work site materials. Operate all types of rotary mowers when mowing grasses and weeds on County right of ways and intersections. Perform general road maintenance duties such as cutting brush and trees, repairing asphalt and concrete surfaces, installing and removing snow fence and picking up trash; perform general bridge construction duties including repairing and maintaining culverts, building forms, pouring and finishing concrete, removing and replacing damaged sign posts, bridge planks and railings, and welding steel bridge girders, support brackets and pilings. Perform general laboring duties in connection with assigned projects; may supervise subordinate employees engaged in general labor and equipment operation on an assigned project; utilize two-way radio to maintain communication with office, supervisor and/or district personnel. Perform routine preventive maintenance on equipment operated including checking and changing oil filters and oil, fueling and washing equipment, checking other fluid levels lubricating, inspecting, and changing tires, and related maintenance work. Complete daily logs and reports noting maintenance performed, materials used and/or tasks completed; maintain shop area and shop equipment; monitor ongoing road conditions within district; attend routine safety and staff meetings as required. DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS Considerable knowledge of the operation, and/or maintenance of characteristics of heavy construction equipment. Considerable knowledge of the operating hazards, and of the safety rules and precautions, applicable to the equipment being operated. Ability to detect needed repairs and to make minor field repairs and adjustment to service equipment. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to work with limited supervision in the performance of regular working duties. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public. Skill in the operation of heavy duty road construction and maintenance equipment. DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE Graduation from High School, or equivalent and experience in the operation of heavy construction and maintenance equipment. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Completion of junior high school and some experience in the operation of heavy construction and maintenance equipment or any equivalent combination of the training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge for this position. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIRMENTS Possession of a valid Nebraska Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B type. Possession of a valid Nebraska Driver’s License. May require a Nebraska Certified Pesticide Applicator License. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Will be required to pass NIMS (National Incident Management System) training.
