USA TODAY is seeking a reporter to tell the story of the pursuit of the American Dream through real estate, primarily focusing on the economic, societal/cultural and regulatory forces that help or hinder home ownership and creating generational wealth and stability, including mortgage and other financial markets, policies and practices, personal money habits and consumer protection laws.

The availability and affordability of rental housing and personal finance stories about how to buy or sell homes will also be key coverage areas. The key to our coverage will be humanizing the story and reflecting the experiences and aspirations of our readers. The reporter will coordinate story plans with the housing and social services reporter, and they will occasionally work on stories together.

Additional topics for this beat include the condition of various real estate markets, including commercial real estate. A final pillar of coverage is how climate change is reshaping the housing landscape, in concert with the climate team’s coverage.
