The Arizona Republic/azcentral.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is searching for an experienced digital producer/copy editor to join the production desk at The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com in Phoenix.   

The ideal candidate is a digital-savvy copy editor who's a stickler for style and clarity who can write headlines that capture a reader's attention and is comfortable with handling any topic: news, business, features or something from the Arizona sports scene. We want someone who’s an expert in SEO who works well under pressure to meet demanding deadlines with prior digital news or story packaging experience. Candidates should demonstrate an understanding of audience metrics and SEO with the goal of growing the audience. Candidates should be detail-oriented and a strong collaborator.  

Typical job duties:  

  • Edit, produce and publish content, whether sports, news or features, optimizing for SEO and digital best practices. 
  • Manage home pages, programming desktop and mobile, to engage a loyal audience.  
  • Monitor SEO trends in our market, track our daily progress to goals and make recommendations for new content or adjustments to existing content. Familiarity with Searchlight Conductor, Parse.ly, Google Analytics and Google Trends a plus.  
  • Edit sensitive content for clarity, fairness, legal issues, spelling, grammar, punctuation and style.   
  • Direct and edit breaking news reporters in the absence of the breaking news editor.  
  • Monitor wire services and other media.  

Requirements:   

  • Bachelor's or master’s degree in communications, journalism or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.   
  • Minimum 5 years of experience working for a daily news organization.   
  • Top-notch writing, editing and headline-writing skills.   
  • Proven experience in search engine optimization.  
  • Excellent news judgment.   
  • Excellent communication skills.   
  • Experience with advanced storytelling techniques on multiple platforms.   
  • Effective communicator; able to get along with diverse personalities.   
  • Able to multitask and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing industry.   
  • Ability to act calmly and decisively in complex breaking news situations.   
  • Strong knowledge of AP style.   
  • Able to work early morning, night or weekend shifts. 
  • Employment is contingent on passing a post-offer, pre-employment background check.
