College Sports Reporter
The Register-Guard/registerguard.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is looking for an experienced sports reporter to identify trending and enterprise stories on the University of Oregon Ducks.
The University of Oregon produces nationally ranked teams in ‘major’ sports such as football, women’s basketball, men’s basketball, softball and baseball, and has one of the pre-eminent track and field programs.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced journalist to produce high-quality content that identifies trending sports stories, reacting to breaking news and turning smart short- and long-term enterprise stories. Covering the Ducks requires a reporter who is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment which includes competition from statewide media, national media and sites devoted to recruiting and all things Ducks.
Candidates also must be able to write quickly and cleanly and appreciate working in a collaborative team environment. A strong understanding of audience metrics and engagement strategies is important. Experience in developing social engagement and growing followers through audience-driven service journalism is a plus.
Located in the Willamette Valley, Eugene is about an hour from the beautiful, rugged Oregon Coast. Head north on Interstate 5 to reach Salem, the state capital, in under an hour, or Portland in two hours.
The Eugene Airport is just 10 minutes from downtown, and Amtrak rolls into the city center. Eugene, a robust and vibrant college town, is known as TrackTown USA for its outdoors-minded community with miles of urban forested trails for hiking and running.
As a culinary destination, Eugene offers an abundance of locally grown, raised and produced food and beverage products. Together with neighboring Springfield, the city of Eugene provides a quality of life affirmed and enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.
